Native American tribes lived in the area before the Spanish settlers later became California. When the Spaniards came across Native American settlements, they named them Lankeria. One of these native settlements eventually became the home of Rancho Feliz. Rancho Feliz was a land grant in 1795 by Spanish Governor Pedro Fajes to Jose Vicente Feliz, one of the first Spanish settlers in California. The boundaries of the grant were the Los Angeles River in the north and east and the Santa Monica Mountains in the west. This gave Feliz control of what is now known as Griffith Park, East Hollywood, Silver Lake, and Los Feliz. Today, East Hollywood is a desirable area of Los Angeles, with Griffith Park, Hollywood, and Silver Lake nearby. Municipalities are characterized by many architecturally significant homes with a long list of excellent architects. Craftsman-style homes are especially common in Southern California and Los Feliz. Craftsman architects rebelled against the cold modernism of the Industrial Revolution by creating homes that emphasized craftsmanship over mass production. Known as America's largest craftsman's home is in Los Feliz. The approximately 14,000-square-foot house was commissioned by construction manager Frederick Engstrum in 1913. The beautiful house was designed by Commonwealth Home Builders architect Frank Brown.
